The most worrying thing for Arsenal supporters is that many of them saw Saturday coming a long way off.
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert said after his side’s brilliant 3-1 opening-day win at the Emirates Stadium that the clash was probably viewed as the safest home banker of the day.
But there was an air of inevitability about Arsenal’s loss. When Antonio Luna scored Villa’s third goal there was no huge sense of shock among home supporters, merely a feeling of resignation.
The Gunners have at least £70million burning a hole in their pocket but haven’t spent a penny. And after allowing 17 fringe players to leave, Arsene Wenger has arguably a weaker squad than at the end of last season.
To make matters worse, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna, Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky all picked up injuries and Laurent Koscielny’s sending off means he will miss Saturday’s trip to Fulham. It’s negative at the Emirates
However, the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust yesterday called for the club to halt talks over a new contract for Wenger next summer.
My question is, which player should Arsene Wenger buy?
