Miley Cyrus loves us fans so much she released the director’s cut of “Wrecking Ball” a little bit early. The original has, as of publishing, 149,888,636 views on Vevo. That’s about 100,000 views short of the 150,000,000 hits Miley teased as the goal to reach in order to see the special edition of her video.
So what’s this version have that the original lacked? More construction items for Miley to straddle? Dangerous. More clothing? Hardly. Less clothing? Impossible.
Actually, the director’s cut has none of the above. This version strips away all the props of the video we’ve memorized every moment of during the two weeks since it premiered. What we get instead is a three-minute, 30-second extreme closeup of Miley as tears stream down her face and snot runs out her nose (it happens). She sings the song while wiping away tears, mascara slightly running. A couple of times she even stops singing as the audio continues, seemingly overcome with emotion.
This version is also 14 seconds longer, likely because of the inclusion of director Terry himself at the end. Miley’s seen wearing his trademark black frame glasses and we get a glimpse of what she wore while singing during the filming. (Spoiler: She’s not naked.)
Keeping with the bare bones feel of this new take, even the announcement Miley made releasing the video is minimal. “Directors Cut @Terry_World #wreckingball,” she tweeted September 24 with a YouTube link.
